"The figure of Daniel Burnham has been very important for the city of Chicago as we currently know it, as he was one of the authors of the Plan of Chicago, also known as the Burnham Plan, which reshaped Chicago’s central area starting in 1909. To celebrate the centennial of this plan several events have been held during this year, such as the Union Station 2020 competition and the Burnham Memorial competition. Also, two pavilions by UN Studio and Zaha Hadid have been temporally installed at the Millenium Park (read our previous article about this), hosting multimedia exhibits on the future of Chicago. The pavilions will be opened to the public until Oct 31st, 2009.
Zaha Hadid Architects´s pavilion merges new formal concepts with the memory of Burnham’s bold, historic urban planning. Superimpositions of spatial structures with hidden traces of Burnham’s Plan are overlaid and inscribed within the structure to create a dynamic form..."

"55 Blair Road produces a spatial experience that excites the senses by promoting light open plan living which is unusual to this type of terrace house. This residence brings a balance between nature and contemporary living in a renovation of an Art Deco style terrace.
Concept
To create a light open plan living space, whilst promoting Inside/outside space. The contrasting relationship between the metallic elements and subtle tones within the house create an exciting spatial relationship throughout.
55 Blair road project is a renovation and restoration to a traditional art deco style shop house. Originally the house was renovated 10 years ago. The new owner however believed it was too dark and desired more light in the living spaces..."

"Saxo Bank’s new headquarter in Copenhagen is designed by 3XN. Although the customers primarily encounter the bank in cyberspace, the physical premises of the head office is of great importance to the management of the bank who participate actively and are highly dedicated to the development of the building. The building is of great iconographic significance, and there is a strong conviction that architecture and design affect each staff member’s performance and awareness of the company...
The architecture takes Saxo Bank’s cutting edge profile as its point of departure. Main lines of the structure explore the balance between dynamic expression and trustworthy solidity, executed with an eye to the framework constituted by planning constraints and intentions. Conceived as two logs facing their gable ends to the canal, joined together by a retracted glass façade, the Saxo Bank building combines curves and sharp angles in a new interpretation of modern seaside architecture. Colours of the sea and the sky in the green glass and white façade elements interchange in the cut-up structure with a lot of X-shapes reminiscent of the letter X in the name of the Bank. Facades are carried out as double curved glass walls..." to find out more...

"The Rudy Bruner Foundation has chosen the Inner-City Arts project, a downtown Los Angeles education facility which provides art instruction to a large population of at-risk children and youth in LA, as one of five finalists for the 2009 Rudy Bruner Awards. The project, designed by LA-based architect Michael Maltzan together with garden designer Nancy Goslee Power, received the Gold Medal Award for Urban Excellence...
With an eye to using architecture and design as agents for social change, Maltzan and Power created a campus where every space is a “teachable moment,” from the way the buildings are designed, arranged and used, to the way nature is invited in to what used to be a concrete jungle. And what fired up Maltzan and Power’s own creativity was looking at artwork presented by the children when asked to envision what their ideal Inner-City Arts campus would look like...
Each building has its own character and function. The original building was a 1930s bow-string truss shell, a huge open space with no interior divisions. Working in collaboration with architects Marmol Radziner and Associates, the design features large glass openings and roll up doors that open onto the central plaza, echoing the original auto shop doors. The light industrial quality of the original structure and the surrounding neighborhood set the tone for architecture overall. Most of the ceilings are left raw, open to the rafters..." to find out more...

One of the impressive work by Atelier Tekuto / Yasuhiro Yamashita when i saw it in Tokyo.

"The site is located near the center of Tokyo. It is a small plot of 44.62㎡bounded by two streets. Conforming to legal conditions and in response to the client’s wish for a ‘roofed garage’ the volume was trimmed from various directions. ‘Minerals’ and ‘reflection’ are keywords that help turn the negative factor of elimination into a positive one.

‘Minerals’ are considered to combine abstract properties (conceptual object) with nonfigurative properties (object whose presence of matter is more obvious). Changes from transparent, translucent to opaque occur according to light entering in certain ways at certain angles. The body can in no way be treated as a simple element.
‘Reflection’ is a recent keyword pertaining to the perception of space. Vision is an important factor in the recognition of space. My interest lies in such area of visual perception. By shaping volumes in polyhedra (facets with three factors―transparent, translucent and opaque) and entangling them in three-dimensional way inside the internal space, visual reflection is induced, which results in deviation from the restrictiveness of space..." to find out more...

"...The office situates the practice of architecture within a broader context of performative research and material investigations that negotiate dynamic relationships between users and environments...

Architecture is pursued not as static form or pre-programmed space, but as an arena for adaptive and responsive behaviors. This is an active and opportunistic architecture, articulated through and defined by spontaneous, constantly changing relationships: between functionality and subjective engagement, between optical and haptic conditions, between a building and its surroundings..."

"Founded in 2003 by Minsuk Cho in Seoul, Korea, as a critical investigation of architecture in the context of mass production, intensely over-populated urban conditions, and other emergent cultural niches that define contemporary society. Amid the many frictions defining spatial conditions in the twenty-first century, namely past vs. future, local vs. global, utopia vs. reality, and individual vs. collective, Mass Studies focuses on the operative complexity of these multiple conditions instead of striving for a singular, unified perspective. For each architectural project, which exist across a wide range of scales, Mass Studies explores issues such as spatial systems/matrixes, building materials/techniques, and typological divergences to foster a vision that allows the discovery of new socio/cultural potential." to find out more...

"It's no wonder, then, that Ned Kahn's work with complex natural systems elicits mythic and contemporary associations. An artist from Northern California, Kahn replicates the forms and forces of nature..."

"Kahn combines science, art and technology to integrate natural, human, and artificial systems, and his specific works emphasise natural elements, such as water, fire, wind and sand; how these behave independently, and how they interact..."

Kengo Kuma always one of my favourite architect. I was impressed by Vladimir Belogolovsky talks with Kengo Kuma. Among other things Kuma discusses his desire to create "weak" buildings.
"...Quest against gravity is all architects’ old theme. Many contemporary masters try hard to cheat the eye. They beef up their structures, exaggerate projecting cantilevers, and reduce the number of supports. Kuma’s buildings stand firmly on the ground. His idea of fighting gravity is based on material perception. The architect’s buildings do not appear to be solid. Instead, they visually disintegrate into particles producing mesmerizing effects. “My aim is not to create particle-like works of architecture. I want to create a condition that is as vague and ambiguous as drifting particles. The closest thing to such a condition is a rainbow,” says the architect..."

"...Weak relates to the idea of breaking materials into particles. The concrete building is very strong – too strong for the human body. I think that the human body is very week and fragile. So people can’t feel comfortable in strong places. But if the building itself is as weak as a human body, we feel comfortable..."
"...The word ma in Japanese means space or sense of place, and it is as important for reading architecture as buildings that relate to it. In all of my works the void is very important. It connects and organizes various elements. In my design for the Museum of Ando Hiroshige it is the void that connects the city with the mountain behind the museum building..." to find out more...

BIG

"Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG - is a Copenhagen based group of 85 architects, designers, builders and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and development.Historically the field of architecture has been dominated by 2 opposing extremes... We believe that there is a third way wedged in the no mans land between the diametrical opposites. Or in the small but very fertile overlap between the two. A pragmatic utopian architecture that takes on the creation of socially, economically and environmentally perfect places as a practical objective..." to find out more...

J. MAYER H. Exhibition “Patterns of Speculation” (February 06, 2009 - Tuesday, July 07, 2009) is currently holding at SFMOMA. Check out his great work that not only limited to building architecture.

"...focuses on works at the intersection of architecture, communication and new technology. Recent projects include the Town Hall in Ostfildern, Germany, a student center at Karlsruhe University and the redevelopment of the Plaza de la Encarnacion in Sevilla, Spain. From urban planning schemes and buildings to installation work and objects with new materials, the relationship between the human body, technology and nature form the background for a new production of space... Another young architect that impressed me during the ArchiFest 2008. One of the points as follows:
" ...TERROIR's interest in landscape is evidenced in conceptual operations which are often derived from natural occurrences and which then fuel stories about a project - stories which contain within them the design intelligence with which a project is explored and resolved. This emphasis on easily understood concepts and storytelling are fundamental to the participation of team members and clients in the design process..." to find out more...

Met this cool architect at archifest 2008. I like his "portable stuff" that i have been also exploring during my thesis work. Description that i could put on his work is about "unique, refreshing and colored" that really reflects what a spirit a young architect should have. Check out his homepage and get inspired!

" Named in Wallpaper Magazine’s Architects Directory, an "annual guide to the world’s most innovative practices", Andrew Maynard’s design practice is quickly becoming recognised as an emerging force on the architectural scene. Since Andrew Maynard Architects was established in late 2002 it has been recognised internationally in media, awards and exhibitions for its unique body of built work and its experimental conceptual design polemics..."
