"Starting from countless different approaches, what finally emerged was the idea of a ring-shaped building with a spacious atrium and connecting walkways, the “laces” (like the laces of a shoe), which give the structure its name on account of their particular geometry: crossing the airspace of the atrium, they connect office areas lying opposite each other on each level and thus “tie” the volume together to form an office building that is rich in multi-faceted relationships. These pioneering practitioners are responsible for designing, describing and building some of the most innovative and experimental buildings of our generation. These include KPF’s designs for the new Bishopsgate Tower in London, Foster + Partners’s iconic Swiss Re and new Beijing Airport, and Arup Sport’s collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron on Munich’s Allianz Arena and the new ‘birds nest’ National Stadium in Beijing..."

An interesting 3-day workshop by MAD! Together with the 11 young famous architects, the mission was to create an experimental urban vision for Huaxi. Each proposal provided a unique design for a single part of the masterplan, based on their own understanding and interpretation of the local natural and cultural elements.
"...The result is a series of organic individual buildings, growing from the natural environment, and working together to produce a compound of diverse urban activities The site of Huaxi is famous for its dramatic and beautiful landscape, as well as a diverse mix of minority cultural inhabitants during its history. Its future is defined by the local government's urban planning as a new urban centre for finance, cultural activities and tourism. ... In this high density urban environment, the limits of urbanization are controlled and set by nature; the buildings take on the dynamic topography of the site, touching the landscape in a more interactive way. Generic verticality is replaced by a complex taxonomy of urban activities, defined by a multiplicity of connections, detours and short cuts. "Algorithmic Library, by Columbia University professor Alisa Andrasek, is a “genetic library” of computational algorithms whose geometric configurations form the structural basis of everything from fashion patterns to interior surfaces to urban high-rises.......Genware seeks to exploit the inner logic of life itself—the subtle variations in seemingly identically patterned desert dunes or the pathways of genetic engineering—to bring new form to the built environment. Biopaver uses the built environment as a way to manage nature by playing off of, rather than overwhelming, its own processes.
